WORKSHOP TO PREPARE MALI’S OFFICIAL PARTICIPATION IN THE 28TH CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES TO THE UNITED NATIONS FRAMEWORK CONVENTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE (COP28.


The Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Government Spokesperson, Colonel Abdoulaye MAÏGA, chaired this Tuesday, November 21, 2023, a workshop to prepare for Mali's official participation in the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), scheduled in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023.


The first of its kind, the opening ceremony of the workshop recorded the participation of the Ministers concerned in particular:


     His Excellency the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Abdoulaye DIOP;


     Mr. Minister of the Environment, Sanitation and Sustainable Development, Mr. Mamadou SAMAKE;


     the Minister of Health and Social Development, Mrs. DIAWARA Assa BA DIALLO;


     the Minister of Housing, Lands, Territorial Planning and Population, Mr. Imrane Abdoulaye TOURE.


In his opening speech, the Minister of State, who leads, on behalf of his H.E Colonel Assimi GOÏTA, President of the Transition, Head of State, the strong delegation of Mali to this World Conference, recalled the significant challenges linked to climate change for Africa and Mali.


In Mali, the various results of studies carried out within the framework of national communications and the Revised Determined Contribution (CDN) generally reveal the reduction in rainfall and the number of rainy days in recent years. The major climatic risks identified in Mali are: floods, drought, poor spatial and temporal distribution of rain, violent winds and heatwaves. The sectors most affected by these phenomena are: Agriculture, water resources, forestry and land use, energy, human settlements, Health. So many dramatic events which constantly remind us that the fight against climate change, particularly the reduction of greenhouse gases, remains an everyday battle.


The main objective of this workshop is to improve the performance of the Malian delegation during COP28 activities in order to ensure that the interests of the Malian people are taken into account.


Recalling the principles which must guide the participants in the development of documents, namely: respect for sovereignty, respect for the strategic choices of Mali and the defense of the superior interests of the Malian people, the Minister of State urged the all participants to make concrete and realistic proposals for better participation of the Malian delegation at COP28.


Furthermore, Colonel Abdoulaye MAÏGA, on behalf of the highest authorities, thanked state and non-state actors for their daily effort to contribute to the resilience of populations.
